HC stays Dinajpur mayor's suspension order

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) has stayed for three months the government order that suspended Syed Jahangir Alam as a Dinajpur municipality mayor, clearing the way for him to perform his duty.

The HC bench of Justice SM Emdadul Huq and Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortti passed the order following a writ petition filed by Jahangir against the suspension order on Monday.

Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal along with Advocate Nusrat Yasmeen Sumaiya, Md Mosaddek Billah and Md Rezaul Karim stood for Jahangir while Deputy Attorney General Khurshidul Alam represented the state during the hearing in the court.

During hearing on the petition today, Jahangir’s lawyer Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal told the court that his client did not commit corruption and irregularity and the government suspended him on political grounds.

According to the case statement, the local government ministry on September 14 suspended Syed Jahangir Alam, also a local BNP leader, from the office of Dinajpur Municipality mayor on charge of corruption and irregularity.

Jahangir recently filed the wit petition with the high court challenging the legality of the suspension order.
