Hearing on Shahidul’s bail plea next week

Staff Correspondent: The High Court will hear next week the bail petition of Drik founder Shahidul Alam, who is accused of spreading anti-government rumours in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.

The bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haq and Justice Md Saifur Rahman fixed the date on Wednesday.

Barrister Joytirmoy Barua placed the issue before the bench.

Police claim the veteran photographer used social media and an interview with Al Jazeera to instigate disorder and spread fabricated information during the recent student movement demanding safer roads.

Shahidul - who is also the chairman of Pathshala South Asian Media Institute - was picked up by police from his Dhanmondi home on August 5.

The next day, the case against him was filed at Ramna police station, where he was also placed on a seven-day remand.
