Hilsa GI handed over to Fisheries Department

Staff Correspondent: The national fish Hilsa gas got official recognition as the geographical indication (GI) product of Bangladesh.

Industries minister Amir Hossain Amu officially handed over the certificate to the Department of Fisheries on Thursday.

Director General of the Department Syed Arif Azad received it from the Minister.

Md Sanowar Hossain, registrar to Patent, Design and Trade Marks Department, revealed the news.

Hilsa got the GI recognition as the second product under the Ministry of Industries.

Geographical Indication (GI) is a name or sign used on products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (e.g. a town, region, or country). The use of a geographical indication may act as a certification that the product possesses certain qualities, is made according to traditional methods, or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin, according to Wikipedia.
