Hitting home minister’s car: Bus driver, helper remanded

Staff Correspondent: A Dhaka court has placed driver and its helper of New Vision Paribahan on a four-day remand in a case filed over hitting the car of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area last night.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Sikder passed the order after hearing in the case on Saturday.
The remanded accused are bus driver Manik Mia and its helper Ibrahim Khalil Imon.
Sub inspector (SI) Md Ruhul Amin of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, also the investigation officer of the case, produced the accused before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.
The Motijheel-bound bus of New Vision Paribahan hit the car of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan from behind on Mirpur road at College Gate around 9:00pm on Friday.
The accident took place when the minister’s car was heading towards Dhanmondi from National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) after he visited a patient there.
Following the incident, police arrested the bus driver Manik and helper Ibrahim Khalil Imon and seized the vehicle from the spot.
A case was filed against the driver and helper with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in this connection.
Following recent widespread student protests demanding safe roads, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, on August 4, announced the week-long programme to take legal steps against unfit vehicles, drivers without licence and other traffic offenders, including pedestrians.
