Hold Gazipur city polls by June 28: SC

Staff Correspondent: The Appellate Division of Supreme Court has  scrapped a High Court order that stayed the Gazipur City Corporation elections for three months.

The court also ordered the Election Commission to hold Gazipur city polls by June 28, which was originally scheduled for May 15.

A four-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order on Thursday after hearing on two appeals filed by two mayoral candidates seeking elections to the Gazipur City Corporation.

The High Court stayed the elections on May 6 hearing a writ petition filed by local Awami League activist ABM Azharul Islam Suraj, also the chairman of Shimulia union parishad of Savar, on the plea of anomalies in inclusion of some areas of Savar in Gazipur city.
