Huge rush at Sadarghat launch terminal

Staff Correspondent: The Eid-ul-Azha, one of the two biggest religious festivals of the Muslims, is set to celebrate across the country on Wednesday, a day just to reach.

On Monday, a huge number of homebound people crowded at the Sadarghat launch terminal to leave the capital for home village to celebrate the Eid with dear and near ones.

Special launch services started on different routes since Sunday. On Monday too, special launches are also plying on different routes to handle excess pressure, according to sources of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and terminal.

All the vessels that left Sadarghat for places in the country’s southern parts since Monday noon were packed with passengers.

Many of the vessels left the terminals before of the scheduled time as number of passengers was much high.

Mamun, assistant inspector of Dhaka riverport, told risingbd that rush of homebound people was much high today (Monday). We had to work hard to cope with the extra pressure. A total of 68 launches left the Sadarghat terminal for different routes till 5:30pm. Some of 40 to 45 launches were also waiting at the terminal for trips.

About special services, he said, “Three special launches are set for journey on Barisal route alone as rush on other routes is lower comparatively. The special services are Sundarbans-10, Parabat-12 and Suravi-9.
