Huji militant chief Hannan, 2 aides executed

Staff Correspondent: Militant leader Mufti Abdul Hannan and his two associates, Sharif Shahedul Alam Bipul and Delwar Hossain Ripon, were executed by Kashimpur and Sylhet jail authorities for 2004 grenade attack on the then UK High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury.
The executions took place at around 10:01pm at Kashimpur Central jail in Gazipur and Sylhet Central Jail.
Senior Jail Super Mizanur Rahman of Gazipur and Sogir Ali of Sylhet confirmed the matter to risingbd.com.
Earlier in the morning, family members met the death-row convict Mufti Abdul Hannan at the Kashimpur jail.
The family members are known as Hannan's wife Zakia Parvin Ruma, his elder brother Ali Uzzaman Munshi, elder daughter Nishi Khanam and younger daughter Nazrin Khanam, according to jail authority.
In 2004, former UK high commissioner Anwar Choudhury along with around 70 others was hurt and three were killed in the attack at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet.
The Bangladesh-born envoy, barely 18 days into his new assignment, suffered minor leg injuries in the grenade attack after Juma prayers.
On December 23, 2008, the Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced Mufti Hannan, Bipul and Ripon to death, and Ovi and Abu Zandal to life imprisonment for the grenade attack and the killings.
Later, the Supreme Court upheld the death penalties for the Huji militants, including Mufti Hannan, for carrying out the grenade attack.
After the three condemned militants filed mercy petitions, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Sunday told reporters that the president rejected them.
