International community urged to exert pressure on Myanmar

Staff Correspondent: The Jatiya Sangsad (JS) unanimously adopted a resolution urging the United Nations and the international community to exert strong diplomatic pressure on Myanmar government to take back Rohingya people.

Ruling Awami League lawmaker Dipu Moni placed the resolution in the House, which was adopted by voice votes.

The JS passed the resolution in the wake of fresh refugee influx triggered by the counter-offensive launched by the Myanmar military following insurgent attacks on 30 police posts and an army base in Rakhine State on August 25.

Lawmakers irrespective of treasury, opposition and independent MPs in the House urged the international community to form a safe zone for Rohingya people inside Myanmar under the supervision of United Nations.

Terming the ongoing atrocities against Rohingya people as genocide, MPs also urged world community to lodge complaint against Myanmar government in the international criminal court for carrying out ethnic cleansing in Rakhine state.

MPs also sharply slammed Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi for supporting the ongoing brutality against Rohingya and suggested that the Noble Committee withdraw the Nobel Prize awarded to her for her contribution in peace.

Nearly 300,000 Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh after the Myanmar military launched a counter-offensive following attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) insurgents on 30 police posts and an army base on August 25.
