Int'l Customs Day today

Staff Correspondent: The International Customs Day is being observed in the country, along with 182 other member -countries of the World Customs Organisation (WCO), today (Saturday).

The theme of this year's day is: 'SMART borders for seamless trade, travel and transport'.

The WCO is dedicating 2019 to the swift and smooth cross-border movement of goods, people and means of transport. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has taken elaborate programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner.

A colourful rally was brought out in the morning. Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal and President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Md Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin) are, among others,  joined the rally.

Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion wishing the success of all programmes marking the day.In his message, President Abdul Hamid said customs is playing an important role in the country's development by receiving revenue and expanding trade and business.

He hoped that Bangladesh customs will be able to create a more secure business environment by simplifying the process of customs and using the modern technology. He said the Bangladesh customs is working relentlessly to make smooth the ways of implementing Vision-2021 and Vision-2041. Abdul Hamid hoped that Bangladesh customs will continue its efforts of building the country's economy sustainable and strong.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the government has taken different initiatives to simplify the process of customs for ensuring smooth export and import. "Bangladesh customs is using modern technology to accelerate the country's trade and business," she added. Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh will be established as a developed country by continuing the development trend and implementing Vision-2021 and Vision-2041.

She hoped that the customs administration will play a vital role to create a rich revenue treasure through building a strong foundation of the country's economy.
