Int'l Migrants Day today

Desk Report:  The International Migrants Day-2018 is being observed in the country as elsewhere across the globe today (Tuesday).

On December 4, 2000, the UN General Assembly, taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world, proclaimed December 18 as the International Migrants Day.

On that day in 1990, the UN assembly adopted the International Convention on the protection of the rights of all migrant workers and members of their families.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday greeted Bangladeshi migrant workers marking the International Migrants Day-2018.

In separate messages, they wished success of all programmes of the day. In his message, President Abdul Hamid said immigrant population has a positive role in making the world more diverse and habitable by creating bonds of brotherhood among people of different religions of various parts of the world.

"Immigration is necessary to the development of human civilization," he said, adding that, immigrants have significant contribution in the development of their own country and the foreign country both. He said they can bring the country's infrastructure development and economic prosperity. Abdul Hamid also mentioned that migration has been recognised in the progress of civilization through the inclusion of immigration to the sustainable development target declared by the United Nations. He stressed the need for ensuring their overall welfare.

The President hoped that the expatriate Bangladeshis would enhance the country's reputation and dignity by discharging their duties with honesty and devotion.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon all concerned to work alongside the government to ensure welfare of the migrant workers and their family members living at home.

As a result of the relentless efforts of the present Awami League government, she said that Bangladesh has recognised as Developing Country from Least Developed Country (LDC) in the United Nations Development Index. "Bangladesh has moved forward three steps in human development index from 2017 to 2018… Without the contributions and sacrifices of all immigrant brothers, sisters and their family members, such unprecedented achievement could not be achieved," she said.

The Prime Minister listed various programmes of her government for the welfare of migrants and making the migration system transparent and dynamic. To make the migration process safer and transparent, she said Bangladesh has given considerable importance to safe migration to achieve the 7th Five-Year Plan and sustainable development targets. "New laws have been enacted for the benefit of immigrants in 2018 by the present government," she added.

To improve the immigration system, she said that the work of reforming the legal framework for immigration is underway. An important international document in the field of immigration on 'Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Responsible Migration' is being adopted for Bangladesh in the United Nations this December, 2018.

These new directions would enhance regional and international cooperation and commitment to establish the rights of immigrants, she said. She hoped that migrants would further brighten Bangladesh's image abroad through their honesty and devotion.
