It will work as warning

An 11-year old girl Aduri came to work as a domestic help at other's house for earning her breads at a time when she was supposed to go to school and pass her time playing with friends. She had to do it as she hailed from a poor family. There was no one at her family to earn breads for her. That's why her mother sent her to Dhaka to work as a domestic help at other's house so that she can manage three meals a day or pursue a better day.

But her dream to manage three meals a day or pursue a better day did not come true. Rather, she failed to manage a single meal a day and suffered an untold torture on regular basis for about a year. On September 23 in 2013, Aduri was rescued from a dustbin at DOHS Baridhara in Dhaka in a serious condition as the employer Nowrin Jahan Nodi left the girl there, after brutally torturing her.

The reports which were published in newspapers describing torture on Aduri by her employer Nowrin Jahan Nodi were totally unimaginable. At last, a court sentenced housewife Nowrin Jahan Nodi to life-term imprisonment for torturing her domestic help Aduri on July 18 this year. Alongside, the court also fined her Tk 1 lakh, in default of which Nowrin will have to suffer one year more in jail.

According to the observations of the court verdict, such kind of torture has tarnished all of our society. We can definitely term this verdict as epoch-making. This verdict will remain as an example.

The torture the housewife carried out on Aduri was very shocking. Aduri was served a single meal a day. Nowrin served her Muri or rice with mere salt as food and beat her up mercilessly without any reason. The housewife hit her with a sharp blade or tortured her with heat machine. One day, Nowrin dumped the girl at a dustbin after brutally torturing her, thinking that the girl was dead.

Aduri is still sustaining mark of untold torture and pain in her body. Her sense was back a day after she was admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) after recovery. Later, she introduced herself to police and informed about those who dumped her at the dustbin. A case was filed in this connection. Police on September 26 arrested Nourin Jahan Nodi for her alleged involvement in the torture. Police submitted charge sheet of the case on October 1 after investigation. The verdict of the sensational case was delivered in last week.

But reality is that there are many persons in our society who tortured their domestic help without reason. Several days ago, a domestic help named Sabina was hit with a hot iron rod in the capital's Pallabi area as she could not fry an egg properly.

A big portion of our poor population in the country works as a domestic help at other's house for earning their breads. It seems torture is their destiny. They have to suffer an indescribable torture if they do a minor mistake. They have to do many difficult jobs which are not possible to do in favour of them. As a result, their natural development is hampered and many of them suffer from malnutrition. Aduri is a big proof in this regard.

We think the punishment the court awarded to housewife Nowrin for torturing domestic help will work as a note of warning against such torture. The verdict in Aduri torture case will remain as an example in the country. We expect that high class people like Nowrin in our society will take lesson from this verdict.
