Jamaat leader Hamidur Rahman sent to jail

Staff Correspondent: A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Jamaat-e-Islami executive committee member and ex-lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad to jail in connection with a case filed for contempt of court.

A bench headed by ICT Chairman Justice Md Shahinur Rahman passed the order this noon.

Lawyer Abdus Sobahan Tarafdar and Mujahidul Islam Shahin moved for the Jamaat leader in the court.

Earlier, Hamidur Rahman Azad surrendered before the special court around 11:45am.

According to the case statement, three Jamaat leaders including Hamidur Rahman Azad made remarks about ICT at a rally in Motijheel on February 4, 2013 where they also warned the tribunal saying that the judges needed to think before giving any verdicts as they could lead the country into a civil war.

The tribunal first issued a showcase notice and then issued arrest warrant.
