Jatri Kalyan Samity secy gen Mozammel lands in jail

Staff Correspondent: A Dhaka court on Saturday sent Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, secretary general of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, to jail after rejecting separate prayers seeking his remand and bail in an extortion case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Nabi passed the order after Sub-Inspector (SI) of Mirpur Model Police Station Bajlur Rahman, also Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, produced Mozammel before the court with a fresh five-day remand prayer.

Defense lawyers Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua and Kazi Mohammad Ponir Hossain sought bail of Mozammel and cancellation of the fresh remand prayer.

It is said in the new remand prayer that important information was found from the accused during the previous one-day remand.

During primary investigation it was revealed that “the accused used to demand and extort money from various transport workers association”, according to the remand prayer.

Earlier on September 6, Mozammel Hoque was placed on a one-day remand for interrogation hours after he was arrested on Thursday in a case filed over extortion.

Police on September 5 arrested Mozammel from his Sanarpar house in Narayanganj a day after the extortion case was filed with Mirpur Model Police Station.

In the case statement, complainant Md Dulal alleged that Mozammel, claiming to be a transport leader, demanded Tk 2 lakh from him, and he gave Mozammel Tk 10,000 in front of Sony Cinema Hall in Mirpur on September 3.
