Khaleda Zia to appear before court today

Staff Correspondent: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will appear before a Dhaka Special Judges Court today (Thursday) in connection with Zia Orphanage Trust graft and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will arrive at the special makeshift court in Bakhshibazar around 11:00am, said Sanaullah Mia, one of the lawyers of Khaleda.

The court on October 12 issued arrest warrant against Khaleda Zia after cancelling her bail petition in the two cases. Later on October 19, the BNP chief surrendered before the court and secured bail in the cases.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case for embezzlement of over Tk 2.1 crore by forming a “fake” trust which existed only on paper in 2008.

In 2011, the anti-graft watchdog filed another case, accusing four persons, including Khaleda Zia, on charges of abusing power in setting up Zia Charitable Trust.
