Khaleda Zia’s bail in Cumilla case upheld

Staff Correspondent: The Appellate Division has upheld the bail granted by the High Court to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a case filed under Special Power Act for torching a covered van in Chuadgram of Cumilla.
A bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order on Thursday morning.
Lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali stood for Khaleda Zia and Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Deputy Attorney General Dr. Md. Bashir Ullah stood for the state.
Earlier on November 28, the High Court granted bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the case.
The High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice SM Mojibur Rahman granted the bail.
Later, the state filed a petition seeking a stay order on the High Court verdict.
On September 13, Cumilla District and Sessions Judge KM Shamsul Alam rejected the bail petition of Khaleda Zia in the case. Khaleda Zia appealed to the High Court for bail.
On January 25 in 2015, a covered van was set on fire on a Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Haiderpul area of Chaudgram upazila.
On the next day, Chuadgram Police Station Sub-Inspector Nuruzzaman Howlader filed the case against the 32 people of the 20-party alliance, including the BNP chairperson.
