Khaleda’s case records reach HC

Staff Correspondent: The records of the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia have reached the High Court (HC).

The case records have been sent to the HC from the lower court around 12:15pm on Sunday.

The relevant section of the High Court received the case records from Mokarram Hossain, bench assistant of the Special Judge's Court-5 of Dhaka.

Earlier on February 25, the HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim sought the case records from the lower court after BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia filed a petition seeking bail in the graft case.

The HC ordered the lower court to send the case records to it within 15 days. According to HC order, the 15-day time for sending the case records was scheduled to expire today.

On March 8, the High Court fixed today (March 11) for passing orders regarding the bail petition of Khaleda in the graft case.

On February 8, a special court convicted former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and sentenced her to five years' rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

The court also awarded jail sentences to Tarique Rahman, now the acting chairman of BNP, and four others for 10 years and fined them Tk 2.10 crore, saying that all the six convicts have to pay the fine in equal amounts.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the graft case with Ramna Police Station in July 2008, accusing the six of misappropriating over Tk 2.1 crore that came from a foreign bank as grants for orphans.
