Legal notice against proposed excise duty

Staff Correspondent: A legal notice has been served to withdraw excise duty on bank deposit in the proposed budget.

The notice also sought scrapping the law in this regard.

Supreme Court (SC) lawyer Md Younus Ali Akond served the legal notice on Tuesday.

The notice was served to cabinet secretary, secretary for parliament secretary, finance secretary and the speaker of the national parliament.

A writ petition will be filed if any step would not be taken in this regard within 72 hours, said Younus Ali Akond.

In the proposed budget for 2017-2018 fiscal year, Finance Minster Abul Maal Abdul Muhith proposed Tk 800 excise duty on Tk 1 lakh to Tk 10 lakh bank deposit. Much excise duty will be charged if balance is much more than the amount.
