Let supply of sacrificial animals be safe

Only two weeks are left for the Eid-ul-Azha, one of the two largest festivals for Muslim communities. Muslim communities around the world have started taking preparations to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha. The organisers and leaseholders have already started their preparations to set up makeshift markets for sacrificial animals in the country. Earlier in the capital, a tendency to set up unauthorised cattle markets here and there ahead of Eid-ul-Azha was noticed but now this tendency has been reduced considerably.

This year a decision has been taken to set up 22 makeshift markets for sacrificial animals in the capital for buying and selling. Among the 22 makeshift markets, 13 will be set up in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) area while 9 in the North City Corporation (DNCC) area.

Meanwhile, a process to set up cattle markets outside the capital is underway. Despite the setting up of a fixed number of cattle markets for several years, problems still remain over the location of cattle markets. Cattle markets are seen to set up at school or college grounds, playgrounds, parks and near or on the roads and rail tracks. As a result, general people are to face problems. This time, the local government ministry has issued an order asking the organisers and leaseholders of all the makeshift cattle markets not to set up markets in these places. But a doubt lies whether this instruction will be followed or not. Authorities concerned will have to take the matter seriously and strict action against those who will violate the rules.

It is a matter of concern that a negative impact may fall on the cattle markets due to the deteriorating flood situation in the northern districts. As we know different areas of the country including the capital Dhaka get a big supply of sacrificial animals from the northern districts. But this supply may hamper due to the terrible floods. Communication system in the northern region has snapped due to flash floods and incessant rain. Vehicular movement in different parts has come to a stop. The condition of the roads has become seriously bad. So, the authorities concerned will have to try their level best in taking effective steps so that vehicular movement in the region resumes within shortest possible time. They will also have to remain alert so that the supply of sacrificial animals is undisturbed and safe.

It is a matter of great concern for buyers of sacrificial animals that cows are fattened in an artificial method. It is seen that a vested quarter fed steroids of harmful Dexamethasone group to their cows or such poisonous steroids are pushed into the body of cows through injection to make cows fat. These steroids cause accumulation of fluid in cattle body, making them look fatter. Experts say steroid variants like Decason, Oradexon, Prednisolon, Betnenal, Cortan, Steron and Adam-33 are usually used as life-saving drugs for critical patients. But when fed to cattle, these drugs damage their heart, kidney and liver, and eventually cause death. So, the authorities concerned will have to be careful in this regard.

Criminal gangs remain active aiming at cattle markets and during the transport of sacrificial animals. They demand extortion from the trucks and trawlers loaded with sacrificial animals, putting those at the face of arms. We expect that law enforcers will remain active in this regard. They will have to take necessary steps to stop such criminal activities ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
