International Desk: Malaysian Actor Sharnaaz Ahmad was today slapped with a RM1,200 fine by the magistrate's court for assaulting a Bangladeshi man.

The 32-year-old, whose real name is Sharnaaz Ahmad Bazir Ahmad, pleaded guilty to the offence, claiming that it was just a misunderstanding.

He said he had apologised to the victim.

Sharnaaz, through his lawyer Zulkifli Awang, said he regretted his actions and promised not to repeat the offence, while noting that he was a first-time offender.

According to the charge, Sharnaaz, who gained fame through his role of the thug 'Lan Todak' in the hit 'Juvana', had punched Gous Ali, a golf club employee, in the face.

The act was committed at the 1st floor of the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) in Taman Tun Dr Ismail about 5.30pm on July 22.

His charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt carries a maximum jail sentence of one year or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both, upon conviction.

Magistrate Mahyudin Mohd Som ordered Sharnaaz to serve two months' jail if he failed to pay the fine.

Deputy public prosecutor Nur Farah Adilah Noordin appeared for the prosecution.
