Staff Correspondent: The High Court has acquitted Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya from his conviction and sentencing in a graft case.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam passed the order on Monday.
A special court on February 14, 2008 convicted Maya and sentenced him to 13 years in jail, fined him Tk 5 crore, and ordered confiscation of about Tk 6 crore of his “ill-gotten” wealth.
He was acquitted by the High Court on October 27, 2010.
In 2011, the ACC filed the petition for permission to appeal against the High Court verdict.
On June 14, 2015, the Supreme Court cancelled the prior High Court verdict that had acquitted Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya from the corruption charges.
Later, the minister filed an appeal petition against the verdict.
