Measures taken to reduce suffering of flood victims, says PM

Desk Report: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government has taken all measures so that people don't suffer any unwarranted problem due to natural disaster.

"Awami League government is your government. As long as Awami League remains in power, people will not suffer any unnecessary problem," she said.

The prime minister said this while addressing a public meeting at Panga Rani Kakki Priya School and College ground ahead of distribution of relief goods among the flood affected people on Sunday afternoon.

"Whether we are in power or not, we will remain beside you in any disaster," she said adding that as the daughter of Bangabandhu she and her sister Sheikh Rehana have no high ambition.

"We have dedicated our lives to the welfare of the people of Bangladesh and to building a happy and prosperous country for which Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had liberated the country," she said.

Sheikh Hasina said her government has all preparations to cope with any disastrous situation. She expressed condolences and sympathy on the loss of lives in the flood saying the death toll would come down in future when people would learn to adapt with the situation.

Sheikh Hasina said the government would distribute seeds and other agricultural inputs for next harvest.

She urged the well-off people to stand beside the flood affected poor people. She also asked the non-government lending organizations not to impose any excessive interest on credit.

Food Minister Quamrul Islam, Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Bir Bikram, Organizing secretary of Awami League BM Mozammel, MP, Relief Affairs Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi and chairman of Kurigram district council Jafar Ali addressed the meeting among others.
