Meat traders end strike, place four-point demands

Secretariat Correspondent: Meat traders in the capital have ended their six-day strike demanding a stop to 'excessive tax collection' by the lessee in the city's only permanent cattle market at Gabtoli.

The traders also placed four-point demands to Commerce Minister on the completion of their strike on Sunday.

Representatives from Bangladesh Meat Traders' Association and Dhaka Metropolitan Meat Traders' Association handed over a written copy of their demands to Commerce Ministry. Munshi Shafiul Haque, additional secretary of the ministry, received their demands in absence of Commerce Minister.

Their demands include stopping "overcharging" of fees (hasil) by the lessee at cattle markets, extortion and curbing cattle import in illegal ways.

Earlier, the meat traders stop selling beef and mutton throughout the city from February 13.
