Militancy to be uprooted: Benazir

Staff Correspondent: Benazir Ahmed, director general of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said, “We are in a battle to completely uproot militants from the country. Our operation will continue until we are able to wipe out them.”

The RAB chief came up with the statement while talking to reporters after the second namaz-e-janaza of Lieutenant Colonel Abul Kalam Azad at the RAB headquarters in the capital’s Uttara on Friday.

Benazir, the chief of the intelligence wing of RAB, said, “We won’t get Azad back as we have already lost him. But we have declared a kind of war against militancy to turn this sorrow into a force. This war is to root out militants. Drives will continue to nab them.”

Six people, including two policemen, were killed and 40 others, including Azad, Director (Intelligence) of the elite force, and another official of the wing, injured in two bomb blasts near a militant den at Shibbari in South Surma upazila, Sylhet on the night of March 25 during the army-led operation on a militant den.

Azad was flown to Singapore on March 26 for better treatment.

Later, he was brought back home from Singapore on Wednesday.

Azad succumbed to his injuries at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka early Friday.
