More landslides feared as rains likely in Chittagong

Desk Report: Heavy rains accompanied by strong wind is likely to lash the Chittagong division, according to the weather forecast today.
The heavy rains could trigger further landslides in the hilly areas, the met office hinted.
The death toll in landslide in the hilly areas of Chittagong, Rangamati Bandarban, and Cox's Bazar following incessant downpour over Monday night, has been raised to 140.
Number of the deceased may rise further, according to officials.
In Chittagong: At least 29 people were killed in the landslide at Chandnaish and Rangunia upazila. Of them, 21 people were killed in Rangunia alone while four people including children were killed at Dhopachhorhi of Chandnaish and two were injured in the incident. The injured were admitted to Bandarban hospital.
Chandnaish OC Md Shakhawat Hossain and Rangunia upazila chairman Md Ali Shah confirmed the news.
In Rangamati: At least 101 people including four army personnel were killed in the worst landslide at different upazilas including the district town.
Manzarul Mannan, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Rangamati, confirmed the death toll.
In Bandarban: Six people were killed and five others were injured in the landslide at Balaghata police camp area of the district sadar and the adjacent Lemujhirhiparha and Agaparha.
Besides, four more bodies found in Cox's Bazar and Khagrachhari today.
According to the special weather bulletin of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department Gusty or squally weather may affect the maritime ports in the North Bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh due to deep convection taking place over North Bay.
All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to come close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice, according to the special weather bulletin.
