Mufti Hannan, Bipul seek presidential clemency

Staff Correspondent: Death row convict Mufti Abdul Hannan, chief of banned Islamist outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islam Bangladesh (Huji) and his associate Shahedul Bipul, sought presidential clemency.

They appealed for clemency to the president on Monday evening.

Mizanur Rahman, senior jail superintendent of Kashimpur High Security Jail in Gazipur said that Mufti Abdul Hannan filed the mercy petition around 6:00pm while Sharif Shahedul Bipul filed the appeal around 7:00pm.

Earlier, on Monday, Md Delwar Hossain Ripon, another aide of Hannan, also sought presidential clemency regarding the same verdict.

On March 21, the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division released the full text of its verdict confirming the death penalties of Mufti Hannan and his two aides. The culprits were sentenced to death for the assassination attempt on Anwar Choudhury, the then British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, during his visit to Hazrat Shahjalal’s shrine in Sylhet city on May 21, 2004. The attack killed three people and severely injured Anwar.
