'Mufti Hannan to be hanged after executive order'

Staff Correspondent: Inspector General of Prisons Brig Gen Syed Iftekhar Uddin said Huji chief Mufti Abdul Hannan will be hanged once the executive order is issued in this regard.

He said, "Jail authorities are ready to execute the three death row convicts including Mufti Hannan. The final process will be begun after the state issued executive order in this regard."

IG Prisons came up with the disclosure in a press conference at the old central jail premises in Dhaka on Wednesday.

"Executive order will be issued after ending the process of presidential clemency by the death row convicts," he added.

Meanwhile, Mufti Hannan opted to seek presidential clemency after the jail authorities read out the final verdict to him on Wednesday morning.

In 2004, former UK high commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury along with around 70 others was hurt and three were killed in the attack at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet.

On December 23, 2008, the Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced Mufti Hannan, Bipul and Ripon to death, and Ovi and Abu Zandal to life imprisonment for the grenade attack and the killings.

The High Court, on February 11 last year, upheld death of the trio and upheld the life imprisonment of Muhibullah alias Muhibur Rahman alias Ovi and Mufti Main Uddin alias Abu Zandal, also Huji members.
