Mumbai railway station stampede kills 22

International Desk: At least 22 people have died and about 30 have been injured in a stampede over a foot bridge at the Elphinstone railway station in Mumbai, India, according to local media reports.

Railway spokesman Anil Saxena said the bridge had been busy as a large crowd of passengers, who had been take shelter from heavy rain, tried to leave the station at the same time.

Police said there had been a rumour of the pedestrian bridge collapsing, prompting panic, and scores of people were injured when they were trampled on.

Paramedics have taken the injured to a hospital, the police control room said.

The King Edward Memorial Hospital said it needed types A negative, B negative and AB negative blood following the incident.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a Twitter post: "My deepest condolences to all those who have lost their lives due to the stampede in Mumbai. Prayers with those who are injured."

Deadly stampedes are fairly common during Indian religious festivals, where large crowds gather in small areas with few safety or crowd control measures.

India's infrastructure has long been criticised for being insufficient for the number of people using it.
