Singer-composer-songwriter Lucky Akhand

Staff Correspondent: Singer-composer-songwriter Lucky Akhand was buried at Mirpur Intellectuals' Graveyard with state honours on Saturday.

People from all strata of life paid a rich tribute to legendary singer-composer and freedom fighter Lucky Akhand as his body was kept at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital.

The body was kept at the Central Shaheed Minar from 11:30am to 1:00pm for people to pay last tributes to him.

He was given a guard of honor in presence of Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Annisul Huq, MP Pankaj Debnath, Cultural Affairs acting Secretary Ibrahim Hossain Khan, leading exponent of Gono Sangeet (People's song) Fakir Alamgir, Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique and many others.

The 61-year-old singer breathed his last at Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital at about 6:30pm after suffering from lung cancer.

Lucky was hugely popular in the 1980s, when he was at the peak of his career as a singer, composer, lyricist and music director. His first album got released in 1984.

His songs like Agey Jodi Jantam, Amay Dekona, Jekhanei Simanto Tomar, Kobita Porar Prohor Esechhe and many more are considered milestones in modern Bangla music.

Born in 1955 in Old Dhaka, the music prodigy became a listed composer of HMV Pakistan at the age of 14 and a musician of HMV India at 16.

In 1971, he joined Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, a radio station that throughout the Liberation War remained dedicated to keeping up the morale of the freedom fighters through patriotic songs and programmes.

He later became the director (music) of national radio network Bangladesh Betar.
