Myanmar carrying out genocide: NHRC

National Human Rights Commission Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque

Cox's Bazar Correspondent: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has termed the persecution on Rohingya people in the Rakhine state of Myanmar as 'genocide'.

The commission has also spoken of initiatives by international community to resolve Rohingya crisis.

The NHRC Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque told a press briefing in favour of the commission at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Cox’s Bazar on Monday.

“The killing, arson, torture and rape of Rohingya people by the Myanmar military and border guards is a rare incident in the history of the world,” he said after visiting Rohingya refugees at registered and unregistered camps in Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas of Cox’s Bazar.

“This genocide needs to be tried at international court if needed,” he added.

The commission earlier asked the international community to put pressure on Myanmar in order to stop crackdown on Rohingya people in Myanmar's Rakhine state. The international community is putting pressure on Myanmar to stop torture on Rohingyas but Myanmar is not stopping the crackdown, the NHRC chairman said.

Nearly 300,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh after the Myanmar military launched a counter-offensive following attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) insurgents on 30 police posts and an army base on August 25.
