N'ganj imam killer detained

Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained Md Johurul Islam, 35, accused of hacking an imam of a mosque to death at Gobindapur Majhiparha area of the district's Rupganj upazila on Friday night.

Johurul was detained from Kanchan bridge of the upazila around 9:00am on Saturday.

RAB Legal and Media Wing's Senior Assistant Director Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan confirmed his detention in the afternoon.

Acting on a tiff-off, a team of RAB conducted a drive in the area and detained Johurul, Mizanur said.

Johurul has confessed to killing the imam in the primary interrogation, he added.

The RAB official said Johurul also killed his wife in 2007. He secured bail in the murder case.

Earlier on Friday night, Abdul Majid Dewan, 72, imam of matir masjid (the mosque made by mud) was hacked to death at Gobindapur Majhiparha area of the district's Rupganj upazila.

Abdul Majid, son of late Muslem Bepari, hailed from Magurpur upazila sadar of Tangail. He used to work as imam of the mosque for 20 to 25 years.

The incident took place inside the mosque. Another named Habibur Rahman, 30, was also hacked during the incident, according to sources.

Confirming the matter, Ismail Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rupganj Police Station, said Johurul Islam, son of late Safor Uddin of the area, hacked Abdul Majid while he was offering Esha prayer in the mosque on Friday night, leaving him dead on the spot.

Johurul also hacked Habibur Mia as he came forward to oppose him during the attack, leaving him critically injured, he added.
