No VAT on private universities: PM

Staff Correspondent: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ruled out any possibility of imposing value added tax (VAT) on private universities.

She said this while presiding over the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) held at the NEC conference room in the capital on Tuesday.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith was also present in the meeting.

Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal came up with the disclosure while briefing reporters after the Ecnec meeting. A total of 16 projects were approved in the meeting.

"The Prime Minister unequivocally said no such step (imposition of VAT on private universities) will be taken. She thinks there’s no need for the imposition of VAT on education including private universities for the sake of its development," Mustafa Kamal said.
