‘No bar in holding DNCC by-polls’

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) has dismissed a stay order that halted by-election to the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), clearing the way of holding it.

The HC bench led by Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore came up with the order on Wednesday.

“There is now no bar in arranging polls to the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) as the HC dismissed the stay order in this regard,” lawyers claimed.

Barrister Imtiaz Mainul, lawyer of the ruling Awami League (AL) candidate, confirmed the news of the fresh order.

The High Court on January 17 stayed the by-election to the DNCC for six months.

The order came after the hearing on two separate writ petitions filed with the HC seeking stay on the upcoming by-polls to the DNCC mayoral post.

Later, on February 25, the Appellate Division assigned the HC bench, led by Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore, for quick disposal of the rule.

The by-polls to the DNCC mayoral post and its 18 councilor posts, while that to 18 other councilor posts of the DSCC, were scheduled to be held on February 26.

The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant with the death of Annisul Huq on November 30 last year.
