No bar to continue Ctg cocaine haul case trial

Staff Correspondent: The Supreme Court (SC) has cleared the way to continue the trial proceedings of a case filed over seizure of liquid cocaine from container carrying sunflower oil at Chittagong port in May, 2015.

Alongside, the court also ordered the accused Nur Mohammad to surrender before it within three weeks.

The four-member Appellate Division bench of SC headed by the Acting Chief Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah came up with the order on Tuesday morning.

The court also asked to dispose the case within six months.

With the order, there is no bar to continue the trial proceedings in the case of Chittagong Cocaine haul, lawyers said.

Advocate Zainul Abedin appeared for businessman Nur Mohammad, who secured bail from the HC in the case, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state.

Earlier on October 8, the High Court (HC) bench of Justice Md Miftah Uddin Choudhury and Justice ANM Bashir Ullah stayed the trial proceedings of the case and issued a rule asking the government to explain why the trial proceedings of the case should not be scrapped.

HC bench came up with the order and rule after hearing a petition filed by Khan Jahan Ali Ltd's Chairman Nur Mohammad seeking cancellation of the trial proceedings.
