No one in society above law: Speaker

Staff Correspondent: Speaker of the National Parliament Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said, “No one in the society is above law. Law is important in every sphere of life. People will get justice if the rule of law is established in the country. The role of judges is very pivotal in this regard.”

“Lack of application of laws creates arbitrary rule of power. Interpretation and application of law is done by the judges. Honest, fearless and resolute judges play the key role to establish the rule of law for upholding and strengthening democracy,” said the Speaker.

The Speaker came up with the observations while addressing a scholarship-giving ceremony at Dhaka University as the chief guest on Monday.

“Justice Sikandar Ali Memorial Scholarship” was given to two meritorious students of the Department of Law of DU at the conference room of Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on the campus.

While paying tribute to Justice Sikandar Ali, the Speaker said, “My grandfather Justice Sikandar Ali excelled both in his academic and professional life. His works will act as a valuable source of legal education.”

The Speaker urged the judges to play a pivotal role in upholding the independence of judiciary in the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq presented the keynote speech.

DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the programme while Dean of the Faculty of Law Professor Dr. Md. Rahmat Ullah was present as special guest.

DU Treasurer and also the chairman of trustee board of the “Justice Sikandar Ali Trust Fund” Prof. Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin presided over the function.

The trust fund was set up at the Department of Law of Dhaka University on December 04, 2016.

Joyonto Kumar Mridha and Iffat Sazia Mim, two third-year LLB students, were awarded the “Justice Sikandar Ali Trust Fund Scholarship”.

Late Justice Sikandar Ali was born on January 1, 1907 in Barolekha, Sylhet and died on December 31, 1966.
