No one will starve in haor areas: PM

Desk Report: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the government will continue to provide with necessary foods among flashflood-hit people in haor areas until the problem is solved saying that no one will starve in the affected areas.

The Prime Minister made the assurance while addressing a public gathering at the field of Shaheed Ali Model High School in Shalla upazila of Sunamganj on Sunday noon.

Sheikh Hasina said the interest in agricultural loans from the flash flood affected haor farmers has been halved and the collection of the interest also been stalled.

The government is not only providing relief to the flood affected people, but also they will be given out seeds and fertiliser, for the next harvest, to the farmers free of cost, she said while addressing the public gathering.

Stern steps will be taken against those who were negligent during building of haor embankment, she said.

Earlier around 10:00am on Sunday, the premier reached the field of Shaheed Ali Model High School in Shalla upazila of the district through a helicopter.

The prime minister was accompanied by Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam, Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, State Minister for Finance MA Mannan, State Minister for Water Resources Nazrul Islam during her visit to the haor area.
