‘No pressure from govt to defer polls schedule’

Staff Correspondent: Bikalpodhara Secretary General Major (retd) Abdul Mannan said, “The Election Commission has told us that it is facing no pressure from the government to defer date for the schedule of the upcoming 11th parliamentary election.”

He came up with the comment while briefing reporters after a meeting with the Election Commissioners led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda at Nirbachan Bhaban in city’s Agargaon here on Tuesday evening.

“The Election Commission has told us that it is facing no pressure from the government to defer the schedule of the national polls. It is not possible to defer the polls schedule even if the pressure from the government is given. The schedule for the national election will be announced on November 8,” Mannan said.

A six-member delegation led by Juktofront leader and Bikalpodhara Secretary General Major (retd) Abdul Mannan met with the commissioners this evening.

The other members of the delegation included Bikalpodhara presidium member Golam Sarwar Milan, Vice President Mahmuda Chowdhury and Organizing Secretary Barrister Omar Faruque, Bangladesh NAP Chairman Jevel Rahman and Juktofront leader Mazharul Haque Shah Chowdhury.

During the meeting, the Juktofront leaders said the delay in declaring polls schedule will create confusion and frustration among the countrymen which is not expected.

They also demanded that the EC take all out preparations for holding the polls in a credible manner.
