No tannery waste for fish, poultry feed: SC

Staff Correspondent: The Supreme Court (SC) has upheld a High court (HC) order that banned tannery waste to make feeds for fish and poultry.

A four-member Appellate Division bench of SC headed the Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order on Sunday morning after rejecting a leave to appeal revival plea by tannery owners.

Advocate Manzil Morshed moved for the petitioner in the court.

Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh filed a writ petition in this regard for public interest on July 26, 2010.

"The feed made with tannery waste is unhealthy for the poultry and fish and the fish and poultry cultivated with such feed is also dangerous for human health," the petition revealed.

Later on July 21, 2011, Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore came up with a verdict to ban the tannery waste in case of making poultry and fish feed.

After the verdict, Golam Sarwar, owner of Shoyeb Enterprise, a firm engaged to product feeds with tannery waste, filed the leave to appeal.

On December 7, 2016, the Appellate Division dismissed the appeal.

Later, Golam Sarwar filed another petition to revive the appeal which was also rejected by the Appellate Division on Sunday.
