Now Ebtedayee teachers to go on indefinite sit-in

Staff Correspondent: This time, teachers of Ebtedayee Madrasa have announced an indefinite sit-in programme to press home their six-point demand including nationalization of the madrasas.

Kazi Mokhlesur Rahman, president of the Bangladesh Independent Ebtedayee Madrasa Teachers' Association (EMTA), confirmed this to risingbd on Sunday.

The Ebtedayee teachers announced the sit-in programme after assistant teachers of primary schools had gone on fast-unto-death demanding their salary just next to the headmasters' scale, teachers of non-MPO educational institutions demanding inclusion of their educational institutions under the Monthly Payment Order (MPO) list and teachers of MPO educational institutions demanding nationalization of their educational institutions.

“We take classes from 9:00am up to 5:00pm like the primary school teachers do. We follow the syllabus the primary schools follow. The Ebtedayee madrasas are also conducted by the education ministry like the primary schools. Books are distributed among the Ebtedayee students free of cost like the primary ones. Teachers of both the educational institutions are recruited following the same policy. So, why we are not getting same facility? It is our fair demand,” Mokhlesur said.

We expect the government will meet our demand. Otherwise, we will continue our sit-in programme, he added.

The demands he came up with includes nationalizing Ebtedayee madrasas, salary in accordance with the national pay scale, giving stipend to teachers as per the direction of the primary and mass education ministry, constructing separate building for Ebtedayee madrasas, giving training like primary teachers and giving an opportunity to apply for higher educational institution.
