Staff Correspondent: The High Court has said that it will interfere if any negligence is found in the investigation into the killing of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil came up with the observations as Barrister Sayedul Haq Sumon, a Supreme Court lawyer, drew the attention of the court and demanded judicial investigation into the murder.
Barrister Sayedul Haq Sumon placed reports on Nusrat’s death published in different newspapers to the bench. At that time Barrister Ashraf Rahman helped him.
Barrister Sayedul Haq Sumon told the court that the death of Nusrat was a tragic and sensational one. So, investigating this incident with a police sub-inspector will not be credible. We want a judicial inquiry committee.
After a five-day battle for her life, Nusrat succumbed to her burn injuries around 9:30pm on Wednesday at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
The victim, who suffered 75 percent burns to her body, was put on life support at the burn unit of the DMCH on Monday noon as her condition deteriorated.
Earlier, Nusrat had accused Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa Principal Sirajuddoula of sexually harassing her.
The principal was arrested on March 17 and subsequently suspended.
The victim, a resident of Sonagazi Municipality in Feni, went to the local Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa on April 6 to sit for Alim exams, equivalent to Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC).
Some students loyal to the principal called her to the roof and threatened her to withdraw the case. They set fire to her after pouring kerosene on her when she refused to withdraw the case.
Police and others rescued her after hearing her cry and took her to Sonagazi Upazila Health complex from where she was shifted to the Feni General Hospital before transferring to the DMCH.
