Old Dhaka to be redeveloped: Housing Minister

Staff Correspondent: Public Works and Housing Minister SM Rezaul Karim said Old Dhaka will be redeveloped.

He said, “The government has a plan to construct new buildings in Old Dhaka after demolishing the old ones. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also gave directions in this regard. Government officials concerned have already talked to Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sayeed Khokon over the matter.”

The minister came up with the statement while speaking in a programme at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Saturday.

Rezaul Karim said, “Dhaka aged nearly 1,000 years. There are some buildings constructed a long years ago. It is not possible to build new buildings after demolishing the old houses overnight. So, we have a plan to redevelop Old Dhaka. It means somewhere we find three houses on 5 katha land in the area. The buildings were made by bricks and used cement and rods with very low scale.”

“We will propose Old Dhaka people that we will reconstruct their old houses with modern facilities under building code,” he added.
