Operation 'Eagle Hunt' begins at C'nawabganj militant den

Staff Correspondent: Special Weapon and Tactic Team (SWAT) began an operation named 'Eagle Hunt' at a suspected militant hideout in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj on Wednesday evening.

Sources said that two ambulances and a vehicle of fire service were kept ready in the area. Heavy sounds of gunshots and explosions were heard from the cordoned-off house in Shibnagar village after the operation began.

Power connections were cut off this morning following the anti-militant drive.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of Chapainawabganj Mujahidul Islam said that police and members of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) encircled the militant den 5:30am.

Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit Deputy Commissioner Mohibul Islam said that the militants fired several gunshots from the house towards the law enforcers. In reply, policemen also fired shots aiming the house.

A large number of police personnel have been deployed around the house. Road traffic in the area has been closed, removing the surrounded residents.

Restriction on gathering of people – Section 144 – has been imposed on the area since around 11:30am, Shafiqul Islam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Shibganj said.
