PM hopes Bangla will be UN official language soon

Staff Correspondent: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has hoped that Bangla will become the official language of the United Nations (UN).

The Prime Minister said this while speaking at the inaugural session of a five-day programme organized by International Mother Language Institute (IMLI) marking the International Mother Language Day-2017 in its auditorium on Tuesday.

In her speech, Sheikh Hasina urged all to remain careful about the correct practice of Bangla language and particularly the new generation to be more cautious about spelling and pronunciation of words.

Urging the new generation to be more careful about the use of Bangla language, the Prime Minister said there are allegations of distorting the language. But there has a particular rule of spelling and pronunciation of standard Bangla words, what should be compromised, she said.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid presided over the function while advisor of UNESCO on language issue Anvita Abbi presented the keynote paper on the theme of the day titled "Towards Sustainable Futures through Multilingual Education".

UNESCO representative in Dhaka Ms. Beatrice Kaldun, Education Secretary Sohrab Hossain and Director General of Institute Dr Jinat Imtiaz Ali spoke, among others, on the occasion.
