PM presents sacrificial cow to Jamalpur hijra community

Desk Report: The hijra (transgender) community of Jamalpur has gotten a sacrificial cow of Taka one lakh after they sent a short message service (SMS) to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Ashraful Alam Khokan said the prime minister presented a cow for Qurbani to the hijra community members in Jamalpur Sadar upazila.

On behalf of the premier, he said, Jamalpur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ahmed Kabir handed over the cow to the hijra community this noon.

Khokan said the prime minister received an SMS in her mobile phone at about 8:30 am today. “The hijra member introduced to the prime minister as Mayuri and wanted a cow from her for Qurbani on the occasion of the Eid-ul-Azha,” he said.

Immediately after seeing the SMS, the prime minister directed her Private Secretary M Tofazzal Hossain Mia to make arrangements for sending a sacrificial cow to Mayuri after contacting Mayuri’s phone number.

After making a phone call to that number, Khokan said, the private secretary (PS) came to know that Mayuri lives in the hijra village in Jamalpur Sadar upazila along with 87 hijra members.

The PS immediately conveyed the prime minister’s directives to the Jamalpur DC and following the instruction, he handed over the cow worth Taka one lakh and other relevant expenditures to the hijra community, the deputy press secretary said._BSS.
