Paltan hawkers protest eviction

Staff Correspondent: Hawkers went berserk and locked into clashes with police on Sunday after a team of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) officials to carry out an eviction drive against illegal structure in city’s Paltan area.

Sources said the DSCC team reached the area and requested the hawkers to remove their goods from footpaths. But, the hawkers again sat on the roadside shops avoiding order. Later, the scheduled eviction drive took place in the area. Meanwhile, a group of hawkers tried to prevent them and hurled brick chips aiming DSCC bulldozer.

The DSCC authority started drives to evict illegal shops and establishments from the city's Motijheel footpaths, Doinik Bangla intersection, Baitul Mukarram, Dilkusha, Bangladesh Bank, Sonali Bank and adjacent areas.

DSCC executive magistrate Khan M Nasmus Shoyeb, Mamun Sardar, Mamun Sardar, Abu Sayeed and Assistant Secretary Debasish Nag led the drive.

He said that such type of eviction drive will be continued regularly.
