Pilkhana carnage: HC to deliver verdict any day

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) will deliver a verdict any day on the death reference and appeal in Pilkhana carnage case in terms of number of accused and convicts.

A three-member HC special bench led by Justice Md Shawkat Hossain on Thursday kept the verdict pending after concluding hearing the appeals and death references.

The two other justices are- Abu Jafar Siddique and Justice Nazrul Islam Talukder.

Advocate M Aminul Islam moved for the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General AKM Zahid Sarwar Kazal stood for the state.

On November 5 in 2013, a trial court sentenced death penalty to 152 members of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) for killing 74 people including 57 army officers in the February 25-26 in City’s Pilkhana known as 2009 BDR mutiny massacre.

The court also handed down imprisonment, ranging from three to 10 years, to 256 other accused and acquitted 277 accused.

The government later appealed against the acquittal of 69 of them.

A total of 846 people including 823 BDR personnel stood trial in the case.
