Police member arrested as wife found dead

Staff Correspondent, Khulna: A member of Armed Police Battalion (APBn) has been arrested over allegedly killing his wife by strangulation in Khulna.

The incident took place at Badamtola of the city’s Shiromni area on Saturday.

Arrestee was identified as Mahmud Alam. Though he fled the scene after the incident, members of Khan Jahan Ali Police Station arrested him.

According to police and locals, Mahmud beat his wife Ayesha Akter, 20, and strangulated her to death over family feud on Friday night. On Saturday morning, he fled the scene locking the door from outside. Around the noon, locals informed police as they could not hear any response from inside. Later, police recovered Ayesha and took her to Khulna Medical College and Hospital where attending doctors declared him dead.

Local sources said, “Mahmud is at work with Shiromoni APBn in Khulna. He tied the knot with Ayesha five months ago. They locked into altercation over taking Semaion Friday night. At one stage, Mahmud bit on Ayesha’s throat, leaving her dead. Mark of biting was found on the throat.”

Shafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khan Jahan Ali Police Station, said, “The body was sent to Khulna Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy. Though Mahmud went in hiding since the incident, he was later arrested.

Lodging case in this connection was under process while the report was filed, he added.
