Desk Report: President M Abdul Hamid on Sunday urged elected representatives at the grassroots to ensure justice for the people and work for their welfare.

"Ensure justice for the voters . . . Behave well with them," he told the local elected representatives at a view-exchange meeting at President Abdul Hamid Auditorium-cum-Community Centre at Mithamian here.

The President said real political leaders should always be people-friendly as people make leaders for changing their fate. "You must remember this. Otherwise, they will not even give you salam (respect) after you lose power."

President Hamid categorically said, "Being an elected representative, from a Union Council member to an MP, you have some responsibilities and you are accountable to the voters as well. Your positive attitude will attract them to doing politics."

He asked all to work for the welfare of the country and its people keeping their hopes and aspirations in mind.

About the recent flash flood in haors and distribution of relief materials and other facilities provided by the government and development agencies, Abdul Hamid expressed his grave concern over the misbehaviour and corrupt practices of some elected representatives.

"I got some complaints that some elected leaders did not distribute post-flood relief here properly. This cannot be accepted at all," the President said.

"Shun this negative attitude or corrupt practices and work for the welfare of mass people who voted for you."

The President categorically said the elected representatives must bear in mind the rights of all people who kept faith in them by casting their votes.

He called upon all irrespective of political affiliation to forge unity for doing good things which would help them to build a peaceful society.

Freedom fighter Principal Abdul Haque chaired the meeting. Redwan Ahmed Towfiq, MP, Zila Parishad Chairman Zillur Rahman and concerned secretaries to the President were present.

Later, the President witnessed some development activities of Mithamian upazila from a speedboat.
