Prison van vandalised at HC area

Staff Correspondent: BNP leaders and activists vandalised prison van as police locked into clash with the party men at High Court (HC) area of the capital on Tuesday afternoon.

The clash erupted over detaining two BNP activists, according to sources.

Maruf Hossain Sardar, deputy commissioner (DC-Ramna) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the news.

He said BNP leaders and activists vandalised a prison van while the party chief Khaleda Zia was returning from Bakshibazar court, after appearing in Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

Two activists who were detained were snatched away by the party men. They also attacked on law enforcers, leaving two cops injured, he added.

Locals said BNP leaders and activists crowded at HC area as BNP Chairperson was returning from Bakshibazar court. Police detained two activists-- Sohag Majumdar and Obaidul Haque Milon-- of the party from there.   As a sequel to that BNP activists made attack on the prison van, leaving it vandalised.

Agitated activists also surrounded a police member as he moved forward to prevent them. Another police man went forward to save his colleague.  Then, BNP activists made attack on them, the locals said.

BNP activists left the place after the party's senior leaders appeared the scene, witnesses said.
