Probe body formed over attack on Zafar Iqbal

Staff Correspondent, Sylhet: The authorities of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) formed a probe body over the attack on the prominent writer Professor Dr Zafar Iqbal.

The three-member body headed by Prof Dr Abdul Gani, dean of the Social Science faculty of the university, was formed on Sunday evening.

SUST vice-chancellor (VC) Prof AKM Farid Uddin Ahmed confirmed the news.

The other members of the committee were known as Prof Dr Saiful Islam of the Department of Chemistry and Prof Dr Shahidur Rahman of CSE Department.

VC Farid Uddin said, "The attack was condemnable and unwanted. We are working to ensure security for all on the campus. For this, initiatives have been taken to bring the entire campus under close circuit cameras."

Meanwhile, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) handed over the lone attacker Faizur Rahman to Jalalabad Police Station on Sunday evening.

Later, he was admitted to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital under police custody.

Miscreant Faizur alone carried out the attack on the renowned writer during a programme of the department of electrical and electronic engineering (EEE) of the university around 5:30pm on Saturday.

Witnesses and students said, "Zafar Iqbal attended a programme of EEE department as a guest. An unknown miscreant attacked on him with a knife and stabbed in a crowd, leaving him injured."

"The youth aged 24-25 suddenly made the attack emerging from behind the Muktamanch," they added.

He was rushed to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital immediately after the incident. From there, he was taken to Dhaka CMH on directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
