‘Problems of transport workers to be solved lawfully’

Staff Correspondent: Labour leaders have withdrawn the countrywide strike enforced protesting a court’s verdict that sentenced a driver to death and now they will move lawfully to solve the issue.

Dhaka District Transport Workers Union president Abbas Uddin said this while talking to reporters in front of Gabtoli Bus Terminal in the capital on Wednesday noon.

He said the strike has been withdrawn as the minister assured them of law support in this regard at a meeting held between the minister and the labour leaders.

Abbas Uddin said steps will be taken following law for a peaceful solution saying no one is above law.

He is reluctant to call it a strike as he thinks it was a work abstention of labourers, he further said.

“It was not a strike. Labourers went on a work abstention due to security risk,” Abbas Uddin said.

On February 22, a court in Manikganj awarded life for a trucker convicting him of killing eminent filmmaker Tareque Masud and media personality Mishuk Munier in a road crash.

Following this, Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation went on strike across the country on Tuesday morning protesting the court verdict that sentenced a driver to death and another to life imprisonment.
